Bible says “Very early in the morning, while it was still dark, He used to go to a lonely place so as to spend time with his heavenly Father as if engaging in morning meditation daily” (Mark 1:35; John 8:1, 2). This was so important for him that he didn’t wait for his family or disciples to join him.
His clarity about Supreme Soul
He had his priorities clear and fixed. God came first in his life. He started his day by listening to God during his meditation. This is different from praying. While praying you to talk to God more often than not for a materialistic desire or a blessing for the self or family. In meditation, you are listening to God.
Jesus did not pray because he made it clear that “God knows what you need before you ask Him”( Mathew 6:8). He was not in need of any material blessings. He said, “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me” (Mathew 16:24). This shows Jesus was not talking to God in his meditation. He was listening to Him. He admitted, “I do nothing on my own but speak just what the Father has taught me” (John 8:28).
What made Jesus great was that he knew the truth about God and empowered himself by linking with Him daily in the morning.
His clarity about souls and reincarnation
He knew that everybody is a soul. An entity separate from the body, driving and directing it. A focused look at this would bring an experience of seven wonders of the inner world (1) Treasures of Knowledge, (2) Temple of Purity, (3) Highway of Happiness, (4) Fountain of Love, (5) Palace of Peace, (6) Showers of Bliss, (7) Powerful fort of spiritual kingdom in which atma is the king.
When Jesus met his cousin” (famously called John the Baptist), he saw with his inner eye that his “spirit and power” was that of Elijah,” (Luke 1:17). In other words, John had the soul of Elijah or was the reincarnation of Elijah. Hence while speaking about John, Jesus declared “if you are willing to accept it, he (John the Baptist) is the Elijah who was to come. Whoever has ears, let them hear” (Mathew 11:14, 15).
Thus he categorically declared reincarnation is the truth. The way he presented this truth is also interesting. His introductory statement was “if you are willing to accept it” (Mathew 11:14a) and his concluding statement was “Whoever has ears, let them hear” (Mathew 11:15). Through this, he said that whether anyone believes it or not reincarnation happens.
To lead a meaningful life you need to know that God comes first in life and we are all souls. Jesus knew what is eternal and what is ephemeral; what is separable and what is inseparable. Only the intelligent have this discrimination.
The word intelligence (from Latin intelligere, literally reading between the lines) means seeing behind the obvious and arriving at intuitive discernment, or seeing with the third eye. Jesus saw the eternal, immaterial and conscious entities behind the physical realities.
Benefits of having such discrimination
1)When you know what is eternal and ephemeral, you will depend more on the eternal and less on the ephemeral. Such attachment or grip on the eternal would serve as a rope for the mountaineers. Even if your legs slip, mountaineering will continue. People generally seek pleasure and happiness from other people and materialistic things. These are unreliable sources. Therefore they reap sorrow as they all vanish from the scene when they least expect (Bible, First John 2:17).
2) If you know what is separable, when separation happens you will not be taken by surprise. You will not ask “Why is it happening to me …etc.” For example, the soul and body are separable. When separation happens, you will not grieve. You will view it as natural. Even when some deaths may seem too painful, premature or punitive, you know it’s still separation. It has to happen. The body is new and atma is always old and eternal, it has to discard a body when it is no longer useful to it.
3) Knowing what is inseparable helps a lot.
a)Action and Consequence are inseparable. When you accept this you are inclined to accept whatever happens in your life. You know it’s a consequence of what you did in the past (immediate or distant) regardless of whether you remember them or not.
b)A soul is neutral in gender. Therefore, femininity and masculinity are inseparable. A soul would choose to take a female body in one birth and a male body in another birth depending upon its karmic account. This knowledge helps to view everyone with a sense of equality. When you are with the opposite sex, you won’t feel anything different. This will make all women in the world safe to be around men. Mahatma Gandhi understood this. Hence he said ‘I was like a male to a male and a female to a female.’ Jesus too was a successful bachelor. He too manifested the same attitude which attracted many true female friends towards him. In his real need of support, most male friends abandoned him. However, many female friends came to support him even risking their lives (Mathew 27:55). Interestingly, Jesus said anyone can deal with opposite sexes with a dispassionate mindset (Mathew 5:28). Anyone can make peace with others (Mathew 5:9). He knew soul is perfect (Mathew 5:44-48). It’s ego (the disease of ‘more’) that makes the soul reflect its basic qualities imperfectly (Mark 7:21-23) just like dust on a mirror makes reflection imperfect.
Thus what made Jesus outstandingly great was his realization about God and self.
