“When you feel distracted by what you see, hear, or taste, use this meditation to step back from the physical senses and reconnect with the soul.”
This meditation guides you toward quietness by gently shifting your awareness away from the physical senses and toward the soul. As you become aware of yourself as a being of light, you can experience the body settling into stillness and the mind becoming quiet.
It also invites you to experience yourself as the master of the physical senses, developing awareness of what you see and taste while gently returning to your identity as a soul. The practice closes with the experience of relaxation, quietness, and peace.
How you want to feel
Life stages
Quietness, transcending the physical senses. When we calm our physical senses—our taste, our touch, our hearing, our sight, and our smell—we are able to settle the body into stillness. When we become completely aware of the soul as the driver of the vehicle called the body and the master of the physical senses, then we bring ourselves into silence.
The mind and the physical senses have a deep connection with one another. We can only listen to the sweet melody of our silence when our ears hear but do not listen, when our eyes see but do not watch, and when our mouth eats but does not taste.
Allow yourself to relax and take a few deep breaths. Breathe in and out deeply. Watch your breath. While breathing in and out, gently pull your awareness inside to the real you, the soul, the being of light behind those eyes, inside the forehead.
Consider yourself to be a soul. I am a soul. I am light, and I am joined to this body. Even though you are joined to that body, you are separate. Your true identity is that of a soul, a spiritual being. Remind yourself, “I'm a spiritual being in this body having a human experience.” This human body has eyes, ears, nose, and tongue.
Let's take a few moments and check in with our senses and check out. First, open your eyes and look around. Notice the objects in the room. While noticing them, slowly go within and become aware of yourself as living light. Again, focus on a particular object and return your awareness to your real self as light. These eyes are part of the physical body, and you, the soul, are the master of those eyes. You have complete control over what you see and what you want to see.
And now, let's do the same thing with taste. Now become aware of yourself as a soul, the animating force in this body. You're joined to that body. Remind yourself gently, “This tongue, this taste. The feeling, the experience of taste in my mouth is being transmitted from the mouth to the soul through my taste buds and brain. They are separate from me.” Feel the tongue against the roof of your palate and pull back from that experience and become aware of yourself as a soul. Again, feel the taste in your mouth, and pull back and become aware of yourself as a soul.
Affirm to yourself, “I, the soul, am the master of this tongue, of this sense of taste. I am the master. I have the ability to control, to taste and not to taste, and to say no to the things that do not benefit me.” With this mastery, you feel your body relax and your mind becomes quiet. Stay in this quietness for a few moments.
Om Shanti.
I am a peaceful soul.
