Africa Day 2026 was commemorated on 28 May 2026 in a spirit of unity, reflection and collaboration at the Councillors’ Room of the City Council of Port Louis under the theme, “Water, Climate Resilience and Human Dignity in Africa.”
The event was jointly organised by Brahma Kumaris Mauritius, the United Nations Association of Mauritius and Inner Space Mauritius, in collaboration with the City Council of Port Louis and the Africa Architecture & Built Environment Academy.
As a member of the 4th Permanent General Assembly of the African Union ECOSOCC, Brahma Kumaris Mauritius continues to support and promote initiatives aligned with the vision of Agenda 2063, including the commemoration of Africa Day and meaningful dialogue on sustainable development, human dignity and peace.
The forum brought together a full hall of participants comprising representatives from Government, civil society organisations, academia, youth groups and the diplomatic community, including the Consular Representative of Côte d’Ivoire. The programme was expertly conducted by Mrs Chentah Ramabye of Inner Space Mauritius and commenced with the National Anthem and the African Union Anthem.
The gathering was officially opened with a welcome address by Mr Nunkerswarsing Bossoondyal, Member of the Organising Committee and Chief Executive Officer of the United Nations Association of Mauritius.
Valuable reflections and presentations were delivered by distinguished speakers, including:
- Ar. Ing. Vinesh Chintaram, Chairperson of the Energy and Infrastructure Cluster, AU ECOSOCC, and Secretary-General of the Africa Architecture & Built Environment Academy.
- Mr Mahesh Roopun, President of the United Nations Association of Mauritius.
- Sister Gaitree Ramparsad, Chairperson of Brahma Kumaris Mauritius.
- Dr Gilbert Buckle, Health Policy Advisor, World Health Organization Mauritius, representing the WHO Representative to Mauritius.
In her inspiring address on spirituality, human dignity and inner resilience, Sister Gaitree Ramparsad highlighted
the profound connection between human consciousness, peace and the protection of nature. She emphasised that genuine sustainability must be rooted not only in policies and external actions but also in spiritual values, respect for life and personal transformation. Her guided meditation session encouraged participants to reflect collectively on peace, unity and the creation of a more compassionate and resilient future for Africa.
The event was honoured by the presence of the Chief Guests, Mrs Christelle Pondard,
the newly appointed Lord Mayor of Port Louis, and Honourable Hambyrajen Narsinghen, Junior Minister of Foreign Affairs, Regional Integration and International Trade, representing the Honourable Minister. Both dignitaries underscored the importance of collective responsibility, African solidarity and sustainable development in addressing the challenges and opportunities facing the continent.
Adding a special touch to the celebration, Mr Lindsay Morvan
delivered a musical performance of “Imagine,” conveying a powerful message of peace, harmony and unity.
Tokens of appreciation were presented to the speakers and supporting institutions, including London College, in recognition of their valuable contributions and continued support for community and educational initiatives.
The programme also highlighted forthcoming initiatives, including World Cleanup Day scheduled for 20 September 2026 and the upcoming visit of Dr Raksha Balbadhur for the launch of the VIHASA Programme in Mauritius.
Africa Day 2026 in Port Louis successfully reaffirmed the importance of collective action, solidarity, spiritual values and human dignity in building a more resilient, sustainable and peaceful Africa. The event served as a meaningful platform for dialogue, collaboration and renewed commitment towards the shared aspirations of the African continent and its people.
