13 January 2026 marked a joyful and spiritually uplifting celebration of Makar Sankranti and the traditional Russian “Old New Year” at the Brahma Kumaris Centre, Lighthouse, in St. Petersburg, Russia. The public program titled “On the Wave of Newness” brought together residents of the city, members of the Indian community, and guests from different parts of Russia to celebrate the shared theme of sunlight, renewal, and inner awakening.
Ms Neelam Rani, Consul General of India in St. Petersburg, extended warm greetings on the occasion of Makar Sankranti and appreciated the Brahma Kumaris for spreading spiritual awareness, positivity, and the timeless values of India across cultures. She highlighted the importance of inner light, divine connection, and collective contribution towards global peace.
Didi Santosh, Director of the Brahma Kumaris Centre in St. Petersburg, shared a deep spiritual message, reminding everyone that purity, positive thinking, and compassion are signs of the Supreme Sun of Wisdom in life. Referring to global challenges such as hunger, conflicts, and displacement, she explained that these festivals symbolize spiritual rejuvenation and hope in times of darkness. She encouraged everyone to make a determined thought to uplift others through thoughts, words, and actions.
Prof. Elena Kalinina, Chairperson of the Union of Women of Russia (St. Petersburg), presented a Letter of Appreciation to Didi Santosh for her contribution to the XXX International Conference “Women Changing the World”. Prof. Alexander Koshurko honored her with a Certificate of Honorary Membership in the International Association of Eminent Figures of Science, Culture, Education, and Art.
The cultural program featured inspiring musical performances by renowned singer Mr Albert Asadullin and Ms Marina Malysheva, the famous Russian “Disney Voice”. Ms Ekaterina Kirmel, Chairperson of “Mothers of Russia” and Ms Russia 2015, conveyed her New Year greetings and appreciated the emotional cultural presentations.
A symbolic activity allowed participants to write their weaknesses on small paper kites and offer them into a sacred fire, representing inner purification and a fresh spiritual beginning. The program concluded with New Year gifts and traditional sweets made from sesame seeds and jaggery, leaving everyone filled with joy, warmth, and spiritual inspiration.
