Spirituality Meets Sustainability: BK Delegation Makes a Profound Mark at COP30 Belém

Spirituality Meets Sustainability: BK Delegation Makes a Profound Mark at COP30 Belém

12–13 November 2025, Belém, Brazil — The 3rd Report from the UN Climate Change Conference COP30 reflects a dynamic and spiritually uplifting presence of the Brahma Kumaris delegation throughout Day 4 of the conference.

Day 4 placed strong emphasis on the intersection of health and education, marked by the adoption of the Belém Health Action Plan to strengthen climate-resilient health systems. Ministers also explored deeper integration of climate awareness into global education systems. Meanwhile, several long-standing issues — including climate finance, trade measures, and national climate plans — continued to remain unresolved.

A significant development came from the International Court of Justice (ICJ), which ruled that nations may be held responsible for the “internationally wrongful act” of fossil fuel production and consumption. Reports from global scientific bodies added urgency, indicating that Saudi Arabia is nearing the “verge of liveability,” and the world remains on track for 2.6°C warming.

Our BK representative from Belém, Sister Nazaré, dressed as Mother Nature, drew warm appreciation from participants across nations. She was frequently approached for photographs, invited for interviews, and featured on the local Globo News channel. She was accompanied by Goreth and Nonie.

At the Global Ethical Stocktake Pavilion, Sister Maureen guided a powerful meditation during the dialogue “The Role of Faith Communities in Building Ethics of Care and Justice,” organised by the Women, Faith and Climate Network. Three empty symbolic chairs — representing Mother Nature, future generations, and those unable to attend COP30 — served as reminders of those most affected by climate decisions. Sister Maureen highlighted the compassionate role of faith communities and emphasised bridging the gap between policymakers and vulnerable communities. The session concluded with reflections by H.R.H. Princess Esmeralda of Belgium.

During the Conference of Water and Forests, a Sacred Water Ceremony brought together participants from various regions of Brazil. Alex offered water from southwest Brazil, while Shantanu contributed sacred Ganga water and shared insights on water consciousness. In the creative presentation “The Voice of the Water,” host Maira Fernandez de Melo expressed five calls from water to humanity. Shantanu encouraged participants to reflect on three questions: Who am I to the world? Whom do I belong to? What must I do now? He emphasised that climate action begins with inner awareness and shared research findings from the 2025 Mahakumbh Mela presented at the World Conservation Congress in Abu Dhabi.

At the TED Countdown House dinner event with Project Dandelion, Carolin and Ananya joined leaders discussing women-led climate adaptation in food systems, health, and resilient communities. Speakers from the Rockefeller Foundation, Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, Instituto Alana, and ONE Campaign emphasised gender equity and the power of storytelling for a livable future.

The Laudato Si’ Movement continued its symbolic “river of hope” initiative inside the Blue Zone, where participants held flowing blue fabric symbolising collective aspiration for a sustainable future. Carolin and Shantanu joined this joyful action.

At the Climate Wisdom Studio, Golo interviewed Bishop Holmberg, Enric Noguera, and Sister Maureen on “Conscious Choices for a World in Transition.”

Bishop Holmberg stressed values-based decision-making and rediscovering contentment.

Sister Maureen emphasised the law of cause and effect and the importance of spiritually courageous choices for the most vulnerable.

Enric Noguera highlighted that a plant-based lifestyle can reduce individual carbon footprints by nearly 50%, sharing his personal journey toward inner peace.

During the press conference Ethics Driving the Transition to Renewable Energy, moderated by Sonja, speakers Maureen Goodman, Golo Pilz, and Akash Deep underlined that technology and policy alone are not enough — ethics and moral responsibility must guide global climate action.

A powerful Interreligious Climate Justice Vigil took place in Belém, organised by ISER under the Faith in Climate initiative. Filled with music, unity, and gratitude, it brought together leaders from across Brazil. Nonie and Goreth joined the march, and Sister Maureen offered a serene guided meditation invoking divine love for the healing of the planet.

At the Children and Youth Pavilion, Ananya Tomar facilitated a reflective session titled “Finding Our Inner Stability Amidst Chaos,” involving writing exercises, guided meditation, and interactive discussions with young participants.
