Happiness is something we all seek. Every action we take, every goal we pursue, and every relationship we build ultimately stems from a desire to be happy. But have we ever paused to ask ourselves: Why do I need happiness? What is its true source? Can I always be happy?
On this International Day of Happiness, let us reflect on these questions, drawing insights from spiritual wisdom and personal experience.
Happiness is not just a fleeting emotion; it is who we truly are. It is the natural state of the soul. Just as the body needs nourishment to survive, the soul needs happiness to thrive. Without happiness, even the greatest successes feel empty, but with happiness, even the simplest moments feel deeply fulfilling.
For a long time, happiness seemed to be hidden in achievements, possessions, or relationships. We believed that once the perfect job was secured, once the right person was found, and once everything fell into place, happiness would follow. And for a while, it did. But soon, the mind began searching for something else, something more. No matter how much was attained, there was always a feeling that something was missing.
This is because happiness was never in those external things to begin with. The joy they brought was temporary. True happiness is constant—it comes from within.
Happiness is not a desire; it is my natural state. Just as a fish cannot live without water, I cannot truly live without happiness. When I am happy, I feel light, creative, and peaceful. My interactions with others become more loving, and even challenges seem easier to handle.
Why is this search for happiness never-ending? Because deep within, the soul carries the memory of a time when happiness was natural, effortless, and unshakable. Even when everything in life appears to be in place, the heart yearns for something more—not another possession or accomplishment, but a reconnection with the self.
Happiness Comes from Within
At the core, we are not just these bodies, names, or roles—we are souls. And as souls, our original nature is peace, love, purity, and bliss. Just as the fragrance of a flower is inseparable from its essence, happiness is an inseparable part of the soul.
But over time, attachments, expectations, and false beliefs have covered it, like dust settling over a lamp. The light never disappears; it is merely hidden. The more we seek happiness outside, the more fragile it becomes. But when we turn inward, happiness is waiting—constant, radiant, and abundant.
“Remember the carefree laughter of a child? That’s the soul’s natural state—pure, light, and unburdened.” Over time, as we accumulate stress, expectations, and attachments, we begin to identify with our body, our role, our relationships, and our possessions. This is where happiness begins to fluctuate.
Imagine a lamp covered with dust. The light is still there, but it is hidden. Similarly, the soul’s happiness gets covered by negative emotions and wrong beliefs.
Meditation is the process of clearing that dust, allowing our inner light to shine again.
Just like the sun continues to shine even when clouds obscure it, happiness is always present, even if stress, worry, or negativity momentarily veils it. Meditation helps clear those clouds, gently removing the layers of doubt and dependence, allowing our inner light to shine once again.
The Seven Qualities of the Soul are:
These seven qualities are not something we need to find outside; they are already within us.
God – The Eternal Source of Happiness
Beyond our own inner joy, there is a boundless source that never depletes—God. If the soul is a fountain of happiness, God is the ocean.
A small pond may dry up in the heat, but an ocean remains vast and limitless. While worldly happiness is often fleeting, the joy received from the Supreme Soul is pure and unshakable.
The Secret to Lasting Happiness
True happiness is never about waiting to receive—it flourishes when given. The more love, respect, and kindness we share, the more happiness flows back to us.
Just as a candle does not lose its light by igniting another, happiness multiplies when it is offered freely. Imagine a world where everyone is happy—not because of material comforts, but because they have discovered happiness within.
Choosing Happiness – A Shift in Mindset
Yes, we can always be happy! But for that, we need to make a shift in our mindset:
Happiness is like a lamp. If I cultivate it within, no external storm can take it away.
A Golden Future Begins Today
For global happiness to be a reality, we need a shift in awareness, values, and daily practices
1. Personal Transformation: Happiness Begins with Me
2. Collective Shift: A Culture of Happiness
3. Global Harmony: A New Golden Age
It Begins Now
“Happiness isn’t just a goal; it’s a choice we make every moment. Today, let’s choose joy.”
Happy Happiness Day!
Sit comfortably… take a deep breath in… and gently exhale.
Let your body relax… let go of any tension… allow yourself to be fully present in this moment.
Now, bring your awareness inward… away from the noise of the world… into a space of stillness.
I am a being of light… a soul… separate from this body… beyond all roles and labels.
My original nature is peace… love… and deep happiness.
I do not need to search for happiness… it is already within me.
Like the sun that shines even behind the clouds… my happiness has always been there, waiting to be felt.
I let go of all attachments to external things… I release the need for people or situations to make me happy.
True happiness is not something I chase… It is something I create.
I connect to the Supreme Soul… the source of unlimited love and light.
In this connection, I feel completely full… content… and joyful.
I am a fountain of happiness… radiating joy to everyone around me.
The more I share, the more I receive… my happiness is infinite.
I hold this feeling… I take it with me into my day… knowing that happiness is always my choice.
Om Shanti
