Raksha bandhan: a bond beyond time

Raksha Bandhan: A Bond Beyond Time

For many, Raksha Bandhan brings images of sisters tying rakhis on their brothers’ wrists, sweet exchanges, and gifts. But at the heart of this tradition lies something deeper — a quiet message that, deep down, we all want to feel safe and happy.

This festival gently invites us to reflect on a deeper question: what truly protects us and gives lasting happiness and peace? Let us explore how Raksha Bandhan is experienced spiritually— and how its timeless message offers protection to the soul in the truest sense.

The way it was once celebrated

🌸 The Way It Was Once Celebrated

Historically, Raksha Bandhan was celebrated with a Brahmin visiting each home to tie a sacred thread — the raksha sutra — not just on brothers, but on every member of the household. It symbolized a promise to live by values and righteousness.. As society changed and rituals simplified, the thread became centered around the bond between siblings.
The real protector becomes the one who never leaves us — the divine.

🔗 More Than a Brother’s Bond

In today’s world, sometimes the brother is younger, distant, or caught in life’s own battles. So, while the gesture remains loving, the real protector becomes the One who never leaves us — the Divine.

More than a brother’s bond

At Brahma Kumaris, it’s lovingly understood that the greatest threats are not outside — but they are within: lust, anger, greed, attachment, and ego. The Raksha Bandhan ceremony becomes a spiritual shield — a way to guard the soul from these subtle enemies through remembrance and soul-conscious living.

The tying of the Rakhi becomes a vow not just of purity in actions, but also in thoughts and feelings. It is a declaration:

“I will not allow negativity, waste, or weakness to touch my inner world.”

💫 How We Celebrate at Our Meditation Centers

At Brahma Kumaris centres, the sacred Rakhi is not merely tied between individuals, but between the soul and the Supreme. This bond rise above gender and blood relation. It is a powerful affirmation:

“I, the soul, promise to walk in purity, truth, and soul-consciousness. God who always protects and uplifts me — the Supreme Soul tie this Rakhi to me ”

During Raksha Bandhan, the atmosphere becomes one of deep stillness, sweetness, and sacredness. The Celebration includes:

How we celebrate at our meditation centers

  • A tilak on the forehead, placed between the eyebrows — the seat of the soul — symbolizing the reminder: I am a soul, not this body.
  • The tying of the Rakhi by a sister, representing God’s love and protection.
  • A moment of meditation, where the soul connects deeply with the Ocean of Love — God — and silently reaffirms its inner vow of purity and spiritual strength.
  • A sweet is offered, not only to sweeten the mouth, but to sweeten thoughts, words, and relationships.
  • And finally, a blessing card is lovingly given to each individual — a personal message from the Supreme, filled with pure vibrations and divine encouragement. Many keep this card as a spiritual treasure, often reading it during moments of silence or challenge. It becomes a quiet companion for the year ahead — softening the mind, strengthening the heart.

This whole ritual is quiet, personal, and reflective and with deep feeling and powerful intention.

The rakhi from god: a divine vow

🕊️ The Rakhi from God: A Divine Vow

Perhaps the most touching element of Raksha Bandhan is the idea that God Himself ties the Rakhi to the soul.

This is not physical, but symbolic. The soul sits in meditation, and through the experience of connection — Yog — feels the divine thread being tied by the Supreme:

“Beloved— my Supreme Father, Teacher, and Satguru — I accept Your canopy of protection and Your unconditional love. I pledge to remain in Your remembrance and follow Your Shrimat at every step.”

This moment of remembrance is transformative. Many who experience this speak of it as a moment of divine touch — one that fills the soul with strength, joy, and belonging.

Purity: the real protection

🪔 Purity: The Real Protection

In spiritual understanding, purity is the soul’s true armour — not limited to celibacy, but extended to the purity of thoughts, intentions, and vibrations. When the soul remains connected to the Supreme, its inner world becomes clean, light, and powerful. Such a stage naturally radiates strength and serenity. Many elevated souls who have walked this path before us have shown how purity, lived in silence and love, becomes a force that transforms. Their unwavering faith, vision centered in higher awareness, and fearless nature became examples of what it means to ride the lion of courage and truth. On Raksha Bandhan, inspired by such ideals, the Rakhi becomes a personal vow:

“I promise to live in soul-consciousness. To choose peace over reaction. Simplicity over greed. Kindness over ego.”

Real sweetness

🍬 Real Sweetness

While sweets are shared,, the emphasis is on sweetness of speech, gentleness in behavior, and benevolence in thoughts.
This sweetness, cultivated through meditation and service, becomes the fragrance of the soul — and spreads far beyond the festival day.

Gift you give yourself

🎁 The Gift You Give Yourself

While gifts are exchanged during Raksha Bandhan, one of the most powerful practices in the BK tradition is the gift of silencefive minutes of connecting with the Supreme in meditation each day.

This is not complicated. You simply sit, remember, and feel:

“I am a soul. I belong to the Supreme Soul. His light is filling me with love, peace, and power.”

This daily practice becomes the living Rakhi — a thread that never breaks.
