Living Happiness The Right Way (Part 3)
Happiness is a state of mind, not external events. Learn how inner peace, love and wisdom create constant happiness beyond success or failure.
Every year, September 21 is marked across the world as the International Day of Peace. Nations hold conferences, people hold peace marches, release doves into the sky and many take a moment of silence hoping for peace to prevail. Yet, despite such efforts, the world today seems more restless than ever before. Wars may be fewer in some places, but inside the human heart there is often a greater battle—stress, anxiety, competition, and dissatisfaction.
Ask anyone today—why do you work so hard? Why do you buy new things? Why do you plan vacations? Somewhere deep inside, the answer will come: I just want peace. Shopping, entertainment, or holidays may give momentary distraction, but not lasting peace. People spend fortunes, yet return home with the same empty feeling. This raises a fundamental question:
What is peace and where does it truly come from?
If we introspect, we realize that peace cannot be purchased, or borrowed from anywhere outside. Peace is not something to be acquired from the outside world. It is our original nature, the innate quality of the soul.
“I am a soul, and my nature is peace.”
“The soul is not the body; and just as breathing is natural for the body, peace is natural for the soul.”
This changes our perspective entirely. If peace is already my inner nature, then searching for it outside—through people, possessions, or places—is like the queen who has misplaced her precious necklace. She runs everywhere looking for it, unaware that it has been resting around her own neck all along.
Remember, we only search for things which we once possessed but then lost. The very fact that every person is searching for peace today shows that it was once ours—an inheritance we lived with in the past but gradually lost over time. That is why every person longs for it again.
Moreover, true peace is not just about silence in the environment; it is about the stillness within. Even in a quiet room, the mind can remain noisy—planning, remembering, worrying. So real peace is experienced when unnecessary thinking stops. In that stillness, there is no struggle, no noise— and the soul is light.
Purity and peace are inseparably connected. Where there is purity, there is natural peace and happiness. Without purity of thoughts, words, and actions, peace remains only a dream.
Purity is not just about outer discipline—it is an inner quality. It means living with clarity, honesty, and cleanliness of thoughts. When the soul’s intentions are pure, you feel light and free; but when they are mixed with ego, demand, or selfishness, inner turbulence arises.
Consider a daily life example:
At work, if I help a colleague only to get recognition, the hidden motive creates subtle restlessness. If the appreciation does not come, I feel upset and disturbed; if it does come, the peace is short-lived because it depends on others. But when I help with sincerity and pure intention, then whether or not I receive recognition, my mind remains light. I stay peaceful because my peace is not tied to anyone’s response—it flows from within me. This shows that peace is truly an inner quality, independent of external approval.
Purity of thoughts is therefore the foundation of peace. Without it, no matter how many methods we try, peace cannot last.
Now the question arises: while I, the soul, am peaceful by nature, how can I bring this peace into my daily life? Where can I recharge? The answer lies in Rajyoga Meditation.
Rajyoga Meditation teaches us the process of creating elevated thoughts. The elevated peaceful thoughts arise when we realise who I am —a soul, a being of light—and who I belong to—the Supreme Soul, the eternal Ocean of Peace. In this awareness, waste and negative thinking naturally dissolve.
Rajyoga is not about withdrawing from life or closing the eyes and escaping for hours; but about carrying this awareness into daily situations.
It is a meditation of remembrance: I, the soul, turn my thoughts upward and connect my mind with the Supreme. In this subtle link, His vibrations of peace, love, and power flow into me.
Just as a candle that has dimmed, is lit again from a powerful flame, my inner light is rekindled and strengthened by the connection with the Supreme Soul. For example, at home, when someone’s anger or irritation arises, instead of reacting, I connect inwardly and send them vibrations of calmness—this transforms the situation without words. This simple shift also changes how I feel.
The more I practice this connection, the more natural peace becomes—not as a passing experience, but as a living state of being. Rajyoga thus gives me both the method and the power to remain peaceful in the middle of work, relationships, and challenges.” Rajyoga is therefore not an escape from life—it is a practical tool to carry peace into our daily routine, even amidst challenges.
One of the greatest challenges to peace is in human interactions. Often, people disturb us—not because they wish to, but because of their sanskars (deep-seated habits and tendencies).
Each soul has traveled a long journey through many lives, gathering different experiences and impressions. So when someone behaves negatively, it is not necessarily that they are “wrong”—they are simply acting from their perspective.
If we remember: They are a soul carrying their own story of pain and experience; this is not about me, then our response becomes calm. Instead of reacting to their sanskar, we remain connected to our own original nature.
Practical example: When someone shouts at you the usual reaction is to shout back, creating a cycle of conflict. But if you pause, see the soul behind the behavior, and respond with patience, the fire of anger is met with the coolness of peace. This not only protects your mind but can also heal the relationship.
Peace requires daily nurturing. Just as the body needs food every day, the mind needs doses of silence and spiritual awareness. Here are some practical ways:
The world today doesn’t need policies and protests for peace—it needs peaceful people. A single peaceful soul radiates vibrations that influence everyone nearby. Just as one candle can light many others, one peaceful mind can inspire countless souls.
That is why peace is not only a personal need; it is a global necessity. When we stabilize in our true nature, we become instruments to spread peace in the world.
The secret is simple:
This International Day of Peace, don’t just light a candle—re-kindle your inner peace. Because when even a few souls live in their true peaceful state, the vibrations spread, the world changes, and the dream of a peaceful world becomes reality once again.
